What activities do you think visitors to this UNESCO World Heritage Site expect to find here?
How can Parks Canada best promote these experiences to the public?jburnsabout 3 years agoEnvironmental

I often walk along the canal, and am appalled every spring by the amount of trash that is visible just before the canal gets flooded for the boating season. I imagine that some of this is left over from the skating season, and just general littering. Can Parks Canada do more to remove this trash before it inevitably makes it way to the Ottawa or Rideau Rivers, and onward? I would participate in community cleanups if access could be provided safely.

There’s enough water for everyone to share! Why should one group be given preferential rights over another. During these unprecedented times, it is more important than ever to give more, take less! Now let’s ALL stop trying to recreate what was already working and go enjoy our time on the water!

Some want laissez-faire deregulation, others want hardcore prevention of all motorized use... There is a basic *Principle* in Nature: A vacuum won't remain unfilled! iow, when police-services is ineffective, or removed, the mafia, or drug-cartels, become the only enforcement, & they cannot be removed. ( see the permahell created in parts of Mexico for proof of this ) In immunology, "no regulation" means the cancers take control, & one's body has AIDS. Nature *always* works that way. The reason aviation IS so safe, is *effective* regulation. The EU prohibits *entire countries* from participating in EU skies, because of their lack of regulation. This Principle, needs to be kept central, in OUR View, while we are discussing this plan, or working on it... An abusive kayaker is less destructive than abusive motorboater, because the forces involved are smaller ( human-powered vs motorized ). Rational regulation is consistently more-permissive of unpowered use than of powered use, & the more power, the more regulation. ( gliders are less regulated than personal bushplanes, which are less regulated than jetliners, e.g. ) The sanest regulation system does it in categories, & puts limits on the more-powered categories *behaviour*, to make the less-powered categories safer to be in, see? So, is wakeboarding trashing the wellbeing of lives who live afloat? move it more offshore... is it harming the waterway's flora or/and wildlife? limit it to what doesn't, then. 1. use measurements to discover what is actually the *range* of effects, 2 use objectivity when setting standards, 3. prioritize the most-fundamental ( Nature ) & the least-damaging ( human-powered ), using the brilliant CARVER Matrix, but double-weighting the Criticality score & the EffectOnGoal score ( turning it into CCARVEER matrix ), it is on wikipedia.org it makes prioritizing *strategic*! when every person on the team does their own for all the goals, then you discuss the differences, & come to a more-comprehensive Team understanding, you know? Prohibiting all motorboats seems needlessly abusive, but prohibiting destructive activity of motorboats, is perfectly sane, if not required! Gratitude to all the people in government who honestly are committed to making our world better, ok? Please read the spectacularly-important, though misnamed, "Tribal Leadership" by the researchers Logan, King, & Fisher-Wright, to become competent in *seeing* when the contributors are highjacking strategy, through highjacking *process*, &, being more-competent, enjoy commanding one's own life more... Please also read the crucial-to-this-work "The Heretic's Guide to Best Practices". it gets a few details wrong ( these are *Issue Maps*, not dialogue maps! also, if you lay a page down at your toes, on your Path, the Goal is at the top, & your "next step" is at the bottom, where your toes are. Putting goals on the left, as they do, is bananas. ), but it is the *only* municipal-planning method that is effective! Mind-mapping software, like FreeMind, can do this sort of thing. Salut, Namaste, & Kaizen! ( :
